I remember it so clearly, days that I would come home and the pain would be so great that I just lay on my bedroom floor and cried. I would cry and give my heart to the Lord, I would cry and give my tears to the Lord. The pain was just too much that I held it together until I got home, then I just broke down in my bedroom and prayed and cried out to God.

I felt like the pain would never end. I felt like I would always be in torment. I wanted so badly for God to heal me and sometimes it felt like it would never end.  But as I lay in that place before God with my tears and my brokenness and my not being able to function before him, God reached down and he brought me to a place of healing.

It definitely was not instant. It was a journey with him. It was day by day and step-by-step, it was a little healing here and a little healing there, but the Lord brought me to a great place of healing. It was, as I stayed close to him, as I listened to his voice, as I followed him to the ministries and places that helped me to heal. And there are several bible verses that brought comfort to me during this time of waiting for God to heal me, during this time of feeling like it would never end.

These bible verses to comfort the brokenhearted are something that I clung to throughout my journey of healing. And today sister, I wanted to share with you these Bible truths that I found comfort in as I waited and hoped and wondered if I would ever be normal, if I would ever truly be free.

I’m going to share with you some of the things that I felt when I was in that place of brokenness and the Bible verses that brought comfort to me during that time. All scriptures are from the World English Bible.

Will the Darkness Ever End?

The first thing you might feel is that you are just in utter darkness. Sometimes you might feel like depression is overcoming you. Like despair is your constant companion. The first Bible Verse to comfort the brokenhearted is:

1. John 8:12 says, again, therefore Jesus spoke to them saying, I am the light of the world. He who follows me will not walk in the darkness but will have the light of life.

God came right down into my darkness and touched my heart. Where the devil has had a place to torment you, Jesus can bring his light and again, sister, it may not happen overnight.

As you continue to follow the Lord, he will bring you out of the darkness and into his light.

Rejection

Some other feelings that I struggled with was feeling rejected, unloved and broken. Experience had taught me that I couldn’t trust people, especially people in authority.

The 2nd and 3rd Bible verses to comfort the broken hearted are:

2.  Deuteronomy 31:8 Yahweh himself is who goes before you. He will be with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be discouraged.”

3. John 17:23 I in them, and you in me, that they may be perfected into one; that the world may know that you sent me and loved them, even as you loved me.

I stood on this verse for so long realizing that God loves me. Experience had taught me that I was not loved, that I was not even wanted.

But God chose me.

 God loves me.

And dear sister, he has chosen you to be his own and he has loved you as his own.

And the world may have told you very different, but in first John, there is a verse that says this world is under the control of the evil one. (See 1 John 5:19)

As we look up to Jesus, his love will become more and more apparent to us. It will become more real. So, ask the Lord to reveal himself to you, ask him, to reveal his love for you and how he feels about you. Ask him to heal you from the wounds this world has placed upon you. The fourth of the Bible verses to comfort the Brokenhearted is:

4. Psalm 147:3 He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.

Dwelling on the Past

Another thing that I struggled with was dwelling ruminating, thinking about the past, thinking about the things that had happened to me, wondering why, wondering why it looked like people had gotten away with what they’d done, wondering where was the justice of it?

And in mark 5, if you want to go there and read that chapter, Jesus meets a man who lived in the tombs.

This man was so tormented by evil spirits, that he didn’t even have a home. He just lived among the tombs and in Hebrew (See Strongs) Tombs means any visible object for preserving or recalling the memory of any person or thing.

So this man was living among the tombs of recalling memories or things.

And in my book, Lord help me forgive. I start out the book with a woman who is looking at all the bad things that have happened to her and not remembering any good things.

And I feel like this is something that I did in the past. I looked at all of these bad things all the time. I recalled them.I played them over and over in my mind, but I forgot the good things.

Practice Gratefulness

One thing that my husband and I do every night is we look at each other and we say, “What are your three things?”

What are your three things that you are thankful for that day? What good things happened, what are you thankful for?

And sometimes it’s just something as simple as getting coffee in the morning, but I’m thankful for that. And sometimes we start listing off things that we’re thankful for, and it’s more than three. And it has taught us to be thankful to look at the good things.

This helps people, it helps me to not live in the tombs all the time. It helps me to take my head up out of the water. If things are going wrong and the waves of grief, or there are things that are just hitting you, to take your head up out of the water and say, there are things to be thankful for, even in the midst of these trials.

The 5th of the Bible verses to comfort the broken hearted is:

5. Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you,” says Yahweh, “thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future.

Something to remember is that God has a future for you. You will not always be here. You will not always be struggling with this. If you give these things to God and you begin to walk forward with him, he will not leave you here.

Dear sister, he will take your hand and he will walk you through these hard times into a good future. You have a hope. You have a future with Jesus. He has thoughts of peace towards you and not of evil. Jesus does not have evil for you. He’s got good for you. He’s got hope for you. He has a future for you.

The sixth of the Bible verses to comfort the broken hearted is:

6. Psalm 23:5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil.
    My cup runs over.

And so dear sister, when you are tempted to just ruminate, to just live in the tombs of the memories, in a way, remember God sets a table before you, even in the presence of things that you’re going through.

Release the Burden

A way that we can move forward from these memories and the brokenness that we feel when we relive them in their minds is to release those into God’s hands. And when you do this If you’re really struggling, I would suggest working with a counselor or a pastor or someone that can be there with you and pray for you through this.

But I would release those memories and that brokenness into God’s hands and something that I have prayed is “Lord, I just released this into your hands. I don’t understand. I don’t know why. But I release it into your hands and it is your burden now and not mine.

Choose to Forgive

And I will say I choose to forgive.

I will say, “Lord, I choose to forgive So and so for whatever they did.”

And sometimes I’ll have to forgive myself. I say, “Lord, I choose to forgive myself for ________ and I released myself into your hands. And I thank you father, that, first John 1:9 says that if I confess my sins to you, you are faithful and just to forgive me my sins.

And so you can pray these prayers of just releasing into his hand. The bad memories that brokenness just releasing people into his hands, releasing the burdens that you carry into his hands.

Cast Your Worries on Him

7. And this goes with 1 Peter 5:7 casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.

And the enemy would tell you that God doesn’t care, but that is not true. He cares for you very much. The enemy would like to put all of these things upon you and have you carry all these burdens, and can you picture that?

Can you picture that? Someone walking and someone putting burdens upon them and at the end of carrying this big, huge burden, can you imagine how hard it would be to even take a step forward?

But as we release these burdens, as we in prayer, and through the help of counselors or pastors or people that are praying us through like the healing rooms or, or something like that… I’m casting those on to him.

And we are able to move forward more with God. And you can say this prayer, I mean, after you’ve worked with a counselor or a pastor, or someone who’s praying for you, you can say these prayers yourself.

But at first I would have somebody pray with you because sometimes when you first start doing this, it can be very overwhelming and emotional. So get help, get someone to help you to walk with you. Make sure it’s someone that you trust to pray with you.

Another Struggle

Another thing that I struggled with, which I mentioned before, was feeling like I was struggling day in and day out, and that this would never end.

And I just want to read through some of the Bible verses to comfort the broken hearted really quickly.

8.  Hebrews 13:5b  for he has said, “I will in no way leave you, neither will I in any way forsake you.

9. Isaiah 61: 7 Instead of your shame you will have double.
Instead of dishonor, they will rejoice in their portion.
Therefore in their land they will possess double.
Everlasting joy will be to them.

10. Isaiah 55: 9-13 For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways,
and my thoughts than your thoughts.
For as the rain comes down and the snow from the sky,
and doesn’t return there, but waters the earth,
and makes it grow and bud,
    and gives seed to the sower and bread to the eater;
so is my word that goes out of my mouth:
it will not return to me void,
but it will accomplish that which I please,
and it will prosper in the thing I sent it to do.
For you shall go out with joy,
and be led out with peace.
The mountains and the hills will break out before you into singing;
and all the trees of the fields will clap their hands.
Instead of the thorn the cypress tree will come up;
and instead of the brier the myrtle tree will come up.
It will make a name for Yahweh,
for an everlasting sign that will not be cut off.” says for us, the heavens are higher than the earth. So are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts for as the rain comes down and the snow from the sky and doesn’t return there, but water is the earth and makes it grow and bird and gives seed to the sower and bread to the eater.

Move Forward

If you are wanting to move forward and get that great burden off of you and walk forward with Jesus, he will come down and touch you in your brokenness.

He will come down and deliver you from your brokenness and it will be step-by-step and day by day, month by month by month but each day is another step with Jesus.

Each day is another step of moving forward.

And in the future that God has for you, you will look back and you will see that you’re not in that place of depression, of brokenness, of struggling, of wondering if it will ever end.

And because Jesus carries you dear sister, as you walk forward, as you cast your burdens upon him, as you follow him and follow his leading, as you listen to his voice and know his voice more, as you get used to it, he will lead you.

He will guide you. He will show you the way to go.

 He is faithful.

And I know that when you are in a place of just brokenness, sometimes it’s hard to believe these things, but I invite you sister to just listen to these truths over and over and plant them in your heart because this is what helps you to live in the truth instead of listening to the lies of the enemy that say, you’ll never be healed, or this will never end.  It will end.

God has a future for you on this earth, dear sister.

When it Seems Like a Mountain

I want to speak to that place where it seems like this brokenness, this stuff that you’re struggling with, it’s just like a mountain and it feels like it’s bigger than God at times. It just seems so big. And that’s just our own perspective as humans. But mountains like to try to make themselves seem bigger than God.

If you’ve read this story of David and Goliath, I invite you to just read that story and take it in and think of the mountain that you are facing at this moment and see that it is God with David that helps him kill Goliath (See 1 Samuel 17).

It is God with you that helps you get over your Goliath.

And I just want to read a couple of more Bible verses to comfort the brokenhearted to you.

Regarding the mountains that we face,

11.  John 14:27 Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, I give to you. Don’t let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.

Dear sister, God is with you. His  peace is just hovering over you.

If we’re struggling to have peace, I would cry out for the peace of Jesus to just come upon you. I would cry out and ask Jesus for his peace to be part of your life.

12. Psalm 97:5The mountains melt like wax at the presence of Yahweh,
at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.

These mountains are not bigger than God.

Even if you cannot see it, the Lord is working, and you might add that to your daily prayer that you pray to Jesus,  just thank him.

Thank you, Lord. That you are working, even if I can’t see it, that you are faithful that you are working.

Another Bible verse to comfort the brokenhearted is:

13.  Luke 3:5 Every valley will be filled.
Every mountain and hill will be brought low.
    The crooked will become straight,
    and the rough ways smooth.

What to Do With the Scriptures

Dear sister, I just invite you to take one of these Bible verses to comfort the broken hearted or another scripture that has spoken to your heart and write that scripture out.

  • Keep it where you can see it every day.
  • Speak that scripture over yourself.
  • Pray that scripture back to God.
  • Memorize that scripture.
  • Keep it in your ears. Keep it in your eyes.

It is God’s promise to you, especially if it’s spoken to your heart, it’s, God’s promised to you.

Live in that scripture, instead of living in the tombs, in the memories of the past. Live in the truth, live in that scripture.

And I know that as we have been through hard things, it is so easy to live in those tombs.

But when those memories, when that brokenness,  when those hard thoughts come to you, combat it with the truth that God has given you, the promise that he’s put on your heart.

Speak that scripture, pray that scripture and have it on the tip of your tongue at all times.

And it will help you to move forward out of the brokenness, out of the despair, out of what you’ve been struggling with.

Dear sister, God loves you so much, and he has a plan for you and he has a future for you.

I just want you to remember dear sister, that Jesus does not run from you. He is not afraid of your brokenness. You can bring it to him.

You can stand firm in his word.

14. Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and is able to discern the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

So, dear sister, I want you to remember that.

God’s word is living and active. And as you plant it in your heart, as you stand on that truth, as you speak that truth, as you pray that truth as you memorize that truth and, ruminate on that truth instead of on the tombs of the old memories and brokenness and things that have happened, that word is alive and active and we’ll go to work in you.

Prayer

And so dear sister, I just want to pray for you today:

Father God, I pray for my dear sister in Christ, who is listening to this. I pray for the woman who is listening to this with tears running down her face right now, because she feels like no one has ever understood her

I pray Father, that you would show her that you have always understood her, that you have never left her. That you were with her every step of the way, that as she has walked through the darkness you have been with her Lord.

I pray for my sister that the feeling of brokenness, the feeling of being alone and isolated Lord, that you would bring her out of that I pray father, that you would give her peace.

I pray father, that you would show her that you have a future for her beyond what she is struggling with. That you will not leave her in this place of pain, but as she clings to you and gives her burdens to you, that you will walk her out and that you have great peace for her, you have great things for her and that you have prepared a table for her, even in the presence of her enemies. In Jesus’ mighty name. I pray. Amen.
