Words had wounded my soul. I was walking around with them replaying in my head all the time.
“Read the Bible aloud, so that it gets down into your spirit.”The teacher paced back and forth as he spoke to the Bible college class.
Everywhere I went, I kept hearing about speaking scripture out loud and breaking ungodly words that had been spoken over me – words that kept replaying themselves in my mind, years after they had been spoken.
Not long after, a student I sat by in Bible college shared with the class about a struggle he had had with his thoughts. He said that he wrote down a scripture that spoke about those thoughts, and every time his mind went there he quoted the scripture aloud. Soon, he noticed that those thoughts were not coming as often. He had broken that stronghold over his mind with the word of God.
For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds ~2 Corinthians 10:4 NKJV
I became painfully aware of the power of words. It was as if God was giving me a picture of words that had gone into the very depths of my soul, planted like a seed into my heart.
Yet our God is faithful. When He reveals a problem, we only need to run to Him for the solution (See James 1:5). Over a period of time, God taught me how to get rid of ungodly, wounding words replaying in my mind, and how to replace them with the word of God.
Every word spoken over you is a seed
Can you remember the most hurtful words ever spoken to you? If you haven’t yet dealt with them, your answer is probably, “Like it happened yesterday.”
Did you know that you can pray over those words and ask God to take their negative effects away?
Lift those words and the wounds caused by them up to your Heavenly Father and pray:
Father God, I choose to forgive the one(s) who spoke these ungodly words over my heart and my life. In the name of Jesus, I now break the power of these words and uproot them now. I invite you, Father God to go to work in my heart and my mind, cleansing me from the pain and hurt that was caused. I now renounce the authority of those who spoke ungodly words over me and I declare that only my Father in heaven has the right to define me, in Jesus name, amen.
Receive God’s truth into your life
Now, where those negative and ungodly words were spoken over you, you have the authority to replace them with the words that God has spoken about you (Philippians 4:8, Romans 12:2).
We do this one thought, one scripture, one word at a time. There was a time where I just wanted to be all better right now. But God showed me that each step I take towards Him is like the tortoise, moving slowly but steadily towards the goal. He also showed me that I didn’t want to be like the hare, who went in great spurts but lost his momentum and also the race. (read more about the tortoise and the hare here)
Choose a scripture that speaks to your heart.
For example, I will use Zechariah 9:12
Return to your stronghold, O prisoners of hope; today I declare that I will restore to you double ~ESV
Now, personalize that verse.
Thank you, Father God, that you will restore to me a double portion of all that was lost.
Make it a habit to daily declare that verse over yourself.
You can declare it first thing in the morning while you are getting ready, while you do dishes, while you cook, or even while you take a walk. Choose to incorporate the declaring with something you already do, so that it becomes a habit.
As you consistently declare the word of God over yourself, you will find that it changes you, changes the atmosphere around you, and gives you peace to keep moving forward (Isaiah 26:3).
The Power of Words Scientifically Proven
Caroline Leaf, a Christian scientist, in her book Switch on Your Brain talks about the science behind renewing your mind with the word of God. She details the scientific, physical proof behind speaking and declaring words. If you’d like to find out more I highly recommend her teachings.
living and Active
The word of God is truly living and active (Hebrews 4:12), going into your mind and breaking off those negative, wounding words, healing your heart and soul (which is your mind, will and emotions). I invite you to try this for the next thirty days, continuing to declare the word of God over yourself and over the situations you encounter.
In His love,
Carolyn
So good!
