“I have seen people read the Bible through every year, yet remain spiritual babies,” our Bible College teacher said, “They read it just to read it, yet they don’t apply what they learn.”

In the First John class, we learned the importance of not only putting the word into our eyes and ears, but also the importance of walking it out in everyday life. This is how we walk in the light.

But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. 1 John 1:7 NKJV

walkingpathWe’ve all heard the stories of those who have had run ins with professing Christians, Christians who’ve hurt more than helped, wounded instead of healed, and judged harshly instead of showing mercy.

I want to be a Christian who walks in the light. Where there is darkness, brokenness or sin in my life, I want God to cleanse me by His blood, and show me how to live His ways instead of my own.

I want my number one priority in life to be following my heavenly Father, becoming increasingly like Him every day. For I know, that in sitting before Him, in Spending time in His presence, it permeates every other area of my life.

James 1:22-25 says but be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.  For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was.  But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does. (NKJV)

Some ways I have learned to look in the mirror and remind myself to walk in the light are:

Meditate

Meditate about what you’ve read. Ask the Holy Spirit to make it real to you

Go to BlueletterBible.org and look at the tools tab next to the verse. There you can learn even more about that scripture. It will give you different translations, cross references, definitions and even commentaries about that verse.

Memorize it

Tape that scripture that spoke to your heart to the wall above your kitchen sink so you are reminded of it when you do the dishes. Keep that word going into your mind and heart until you can remember it without looking at it.

Journal

Take some time to journal, putting your thoughts down on paper. What is God speaking to your heart? How can you put that scripture into practice? Is there a heart attitude that needs to change?

Dear sister, God’s word is both spiritual and practical. They go hand in hand. You will find as you walk in the light, that you will shine brightly in this dark world, becoming a letter for Christ, written for the world to see (2 Cor 3:3).

Be blessed today as you live out the word.

In His love,

Carolyn
