“You seem stronger somehow.”
My friend stood next to me at the front of the church that Sunday. We had shared much lately, and she’d been mentoring me, discipling me, really.
I was glad she’d noticed. I hadn’t told her that that week, I’d been memorizing scripture. I knew by her comment that getting the word into my heart really was making a difference.
When I first thought of memorizing scripture, I was afraid I couldn’t do it. I thought it would be too hard for me, that I’d never be able to remember it all.
But as I faced my fear and tried it, I found that the more I memorized, the easier it became, and the stronger I became too. Paul talks about the armor of God in Ephesians, and I think it is no mistake that the whole armor starts with the belt of truth.
I would like to share with you how I learned to memorize scripture when I didn’t think I could.
-
Suppose we are going to memorize 1 john 1:9.
From the beginning to the first comma, it says:
If we confess our sins,
Repeat that little phrase ten times. Count it on your fingers.
-
The second part says:
He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins
Now add that to the first part, repeating it ten times.
So, you will be saying ten times,
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins
-
The Third part says,
And to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
So now you are going to add that to the rest of what you’ve just said, repeating it ten times.
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
It’s ok if you have to look the first couple of times! You’ll get it.
Then repeat the whole verse again.
Can you do it without looking?
Throughout the day, think of that verse and repeat it to yourself. It’s still ok if you have to peek. By the end of a week of repeating that scripture to yourself several times a day, you will have it memorized!
God Bless you today as you hide His word in your heart.
In His love,
Carolyn
