Today we’ll discuss how to meditate on the Word of God day and night.

Have you ever been in a situation or circumstance that constantly battered your mind with negative thoughts?

They just keep coming and assault your mind over and over, and it seems like it is never ending. Have you struggled with knowing the truth of what God’s Word says about you in your head, but struggling with it In your heart?

I have been there too, even recently, and one thing the Lord reminded me was to put my shield of faith up.

Ephesians 6: 10-18 in the NKJV talks about the armor of God.

Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore, take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which, you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints—

I want to look at verse 16.

Above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.

The Fiery Darts

The devil will launch fiery darts of negative thoughts, lies about who you are, about your worth, about your value.

I had someone pray with me recently that said, “You need to take up your shield of faith, and I put my shield of faith with your shield of faith.”

But how do we do that?

Part of that is by putting on our belt of truth, knowing we know the truth in our head, but we are to meditate on the word of God day and night to really get that truth down into our heart.

When we meditate on the Word of God day and night, when we keep our mind and set our mind on the word of God, it will bring us peace.

I want to share with you one way that I have meditated on the Word day and night, and it has made such a difference in my life, especially in situations that I have struggled with.

Find the Verse

The first thing that we need to do is we need to find the verse to meditate on.

I remember one time in Bible college I was struggling with a situation and the staff of the Bible college gathered around me to pray after class.

One of the ladies said, “I feel like you need to ask the Lord for a scripture to meditate on about this situation.”

And so, I asked Him, and I can’t remember how that Scripture came to my mind, but it did come.

But one way that you can find a Scripture is by going to blueletterbible.org or Biblegateway.com and you can put in the search box the topic that you are looking for and a whole bunch of Scriptures will come up.

When you see a Scripture that speaks to your heart about that situation, go and just read the chapter that that verse is in, that way you’re not taking it out of context.

Write it Down

So when you have found the scripture that you’re going to meditate on, write it down.

Sit quietly and think about that verse.

Ask the Holy Spirit to make that verse real to you. Just get quiet. Ask the Lord to speak to your heart about that verse.

What does it mean to you?

What does it mean for your life?

What is the Holy Spirit speaking to your heart about that verse?

How can you put that verse into practice in your own life?

When you’ve done this, hang that scripture up somewhere where you will see it all the time.

Speak the Verse Over Yourself

Speak that verse over yourself, speak it over and over again.

One way that I’ve done it in the past is I hung that verse up in the bathroom where I would see it every morning while I was getting ready for the day. I would speak that verse aloud  while I was getting dressed, putting on my makeup, doing my hair, all the while just speaking this verse, and after a while, that verse gave me so much peace about the situation I was dealing with.

Speak that verse of yourself.

It can be while you’re getting ready in the morning. It can be while you’re cleaning. It can be while you’re cooking.  Something that you do every day where you can be in a place where you can speak that verse to yourself.

Keep that Verse in Your Eyes.

Look at it several times a day by keeping it in that place where you can see it.

An Example from Bible College

And I want to give an example one of the teachers at Bible college gave to all of us in class.

He told us that when he was first saved, he really questioned his salvation, and he said that the Lord prompted him to write out a verse about salvation, and he looked at it several times a day.

He looked at this verse when he first got up in the morning.

He looked at it several times during the day and he looked at it before he went to bed.

He spoke that word aloud and he kept doing it, and he said it took about three months until the question of whether he was really saved or not was gone.

Every ounce of doubt was gone.

He knew that he knew that he was saved by grace.

What are You Struggling With?

So, dear sister, what are you struggling with?

What lie is the enemy bringing to your mind?

What fiery dart is the enemy firing at you right now?

What verse can you combat that lie with?

2 Corinthians 10:3-5 In the NKJV says,

For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ,

Ask the Lord to give you a scripture, a verse that speaks to your situation. Look for those verses when you read your Bible. You can look it up in the search engine at BlueLetterBible.org or Biblegateway.com.

Sit with that verse a while, journal about it. Think about it. Let the Lord speak to your heart about that truth. Let that truth just wash over you.

Look at that verse several times a day.

Speak it out loud.

It could take several months to get it down deep into your heart, but that time is going to pass anyway, so you might as well spend that time putting that Word deep into your heart.

And I want to leave you with this verse.

1 Corinthians 15:57 in a NKJV

But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

The Word is Your Weapon

Hebrews 4:12 in the NIV says,

For the word of God is alive and active, sharper than any double edged. It penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit joints and marrow. It judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

That Word of God is living and active.

That word of God is your weapon.

That Word of God is the foundation of our whole faith in Christ.

That Word of God is the foundation that we stand on.

That Word of God is the foundation of our whole armor.

That Word of God is our belt of truth, breast put of righteousness, shield of faith, shoes of the gospel of peace. We have peace because of the Word, our helmet of salvation. We know that we are saved, like my teacher talked about in class.

So How do you Meditate on the Word of God Day and Night?

You look at it.

You speak it.

You pray it.

You keep it in your eyes, you keep it in your ears.

You keep it in your mouth.

And you keep at it until it goes from truth that you know in your head to truth that you know in your heart.

Can I pray for you today?

Father God, I pray for my dear sister in Christ, but I also pray for myself too, that You would remind us and keep reminding us that the Word of God is our foundation, is our shield, is our belt, that the Word of God is our weapon that we fight with.

Help us, Father. To get that Word from a truth that we believe in our head to the truth that we believe in our hearts. I pray, Father God, that you would help your Word to become so real to us as we meditate on it day and night, as we set it in front of our eyes, as we set our minds on it, as we live according to what your Word says,as we speak that Word out loud, as we get that Word deep into our heart.

Father God, I pray that the lies of the enemy, those fiery darts that have been coming towards your daughters would be vanquished by the Word of God, and that your precious children would walk in victory, in faith, would be steadfast in the Word, that the Word would not be stolen from her or taken from her.

I thank you, Father God, that You would help my dear sister to stand firmly on the Word, that she would know that it’s true that she puts on the armor of God, but she would stand and after she has done all that, she would continue to stand. In Jesus’ mighty name. Amen.
