When I was in Bible college, I sat next to a guy who is now a pastor. During one break we were talking about the Scripture we had studied that day in class and understanding it for ourselves.
A prayer your can pray before reading the Bible is:
He said, “I used to not understand what I read, but there’s’ a verse in the Bible that says give me understanding. I pray that verse every time I read my Bible now, and the Lord has given me the understanding I need for that day every time.”
The verse he was mentioning was Psalm 119:34:
Give me understanding, and I shall keep Your law; Indeed, I shall observe it with my whole heart (NKJV).
I never forgot that, and even today, I pray that prayer before I read the Bible, asking the Lord to speak to my heart through His word. Every day, insights come for daily life.
Lord, speak to my heart through your Word. You know every need of my heart right now. Give me the understanding I need for today, and help me to walk out your ways in my daily life. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Just remember, you’re reading God’s word for guidance on what He wants to tell you right now. You’re not reading to figure it all out. You’re not reading it to be perfect. It’s a gradual process of growing in the Word.
Trust the Lord to speak to you through that Word for today.
